Going back in time: Daniel Gould’s 3D List, Art in Amsterdam #76

We are now into the fourth month of the new Amsterdam Art Season. Perhaps it is a good time to take a look at what has been happening in the art market as to sales. The 3D List tries to maintain an upbeat evaluation by noting how many red dots there are at an opening. Of course, this is more anecdotal than an actual survey. There have been some good selling shows but, unfortunately, they have not been numerous. Other anecdotal analysis has been made by asking gallerist if they are experiencing a recovery? Again, and, unfortunately, the answer has been a resounding "No!"

There is signs that the Dutch economy may be improving but we have yet to see that advancement in more art sales. Do your part: BUY SOMETHING!

WHAT YOU HAVE MISSED:

BITS & PIECES:

The opening of the following article featured a photograph taken at an art show in Zwolle, in 2005, that exhibited the forged works of Fernando Boterol and painted by the Dutch faker Geert Jan Jansen. "In Praise of Art Forgeries,"  by Blake Gopnik. (www.inyt.com 2nd Nov. 2013).

MUSEUM REVIEW: Lee Friedlander at "foam"

See the USofA through the window of Lee Friedlander's car as he journeys across the country. "foam" (Keizersgracht 609) presents the photographic documentation of segments of the trip. Along the way he captures, in his lens, everything you expect to see and more. You will see a sign on a bar that reads "We come bikers" the "l" is missing. About the only scene missing is a shot of a McDonald's Drive through restaurant. Also on view is a photo series which was commission by Harper's Bazaar, the fashion magazine. They sent him to Detroit, in the early 60s, to photograph the new automobile models. The magazine's editor was Nancy White and she pulled the feature. They were not glamorous. That's Detroit! Until 11th December. www.foam.nl

WHAT YOU HAVE MISSED...but there still may be time:

Steendrukkerij  (Lauriergracht 80) celebrates it 37th year' anniversary with a name change. It is now the Rento Brattinga Galerie who is owner and founder. This exhibition is titled "What's in a name?" and could not be more apt; and for one other reason besides the name change. Hanging is the work of about 40 artists including names like Armando, Richard Hamilton, Dan Flavin, Carel Visser, Klaas Gubbels and a full supporting cast of print makers. The selection was made from an inventory of 2,500+ works on paper by several hundred artists of their work done over the years. And excluded where several gems by the likes of Jan Schoonhoven for lack of space. A mini history of late 20th century print making and a great overview; a show well worth seeing. Until 21st December. www.steendrukkerij.com

At "outLINE" (Oetewalerstraat 73) Cindy Moorman---who is a human pop-up having curated and/or performed several shows this autumn---continues her series "This Is A Take Over." The exhibition at "outLINE," on the 23rd and 24th of November, was for Marile Vermeulen and titled "O sole mio."  It was a dazzling conceptual painted "installation." The gallery of "outLINE" is shaped like a cross. Vermeulen did a monochromatic painting on all the walls and the corner angles that make up the space. Candy cane red stripes in parallel arrangement created a minimal abstraction intervention with a maximum impact.

This was followd by Marieke Coppens who did a performance around a parachute. She had found the parachute on the street. Its center was attached to the dome of the gallery space and was about four meters from the floor. The army parachute was divided by 24 blue triangles. It was described as "A work about  time, conjunction and control. Coppens did indeed read of times and figures as the performance segment. It was on the 30th of November and 1st of December.

The next program in this series was on the 7th and 8th of December. Anngret Kellner presented a very unusual exhibition which has been inspired by the Herbarium which is the science of preserving and the study of plant decay. Two hanging works are thick plastic bags measuring about 150x70 cms. They are vacuum packing bags designed to preserve food by keeping it in a vacuum. Kellner has put in each bag a bouquet of flowers and extracted the air. A "living" still life. Cool! How long will the flowers maintain their beauty, their colors? Hard to say. Stayed tuned for further developments. In another section of the gallery there is metal pipe stretching across the space wall-to-wall. On the one wall it pushes on a sheet of thick plastic with a large green leek-like plant, roots and all. In the center of the space there are 55 concrete objects. Nearly all are in the shape of common everyday containers like salt and pepper, flower vases, pots, etc. At one time they each held flowers which---because of the lack of water---quickly wilted and decayed. www.outlineamsterdam.nl

Adam Colton (NL/UK) is at SLEWE (Kerkstraat 105) and is forever blowing bubbles...in a way. In this exhibition he presents both glass blown work along with that made from aluminium. Both are free form; and each has an elegance that gives the imagery a monumental sense. Simple and complex, both! The aluminium reflects light in such abstract ways that you are fooled into believing you are seeing polished surfaces in tension against matte sections. He also hangs preparatory drawings.  (11x16 cms., gouache on paper @ 550 euro; 50x65 cms., pencil on paper @ 2,150 euro; 30x70x35 cms, glass and iron @ 4,000 euro; 53x98x39 cms., Ed 3 aluminium @ 16,000 euro.) 10 RED DOTS at opening. Until 28th December. www.slewe.nl

...And just a few doors down the street is the show for Tejo Philips at Galerie De Witte Voet (Kerkstraat 135) who has a whimsical way of looking at reality. He presents a collection of ceramics that look like something. Sorta. Almost. But what? He then takes these almost anonymous forms and arranges them in groups. Some groups consist of two pieces up to 40+. Do they relate to the others in the shared group? That's where both the tension and mystery comes together. 3 RED DOTS at opening. (275, 350, 650, 2,500, to 5,500 euro) Until 5th January. www.galeriedewittevoet.nl

Maurice van Tellingen is back at RON MANDOS (Prinsengracht 282) with his artfully constructed objects. His work is always fun. Little jokes here and there; the unexpected. But they are also simple and very ordinary settings like a men's toilet in a large theater. You see the line of doors, for the stalls, with refracted light highlighting aspects of the work. Artistically, it is a study in perspective and heavy on geometric abstraction. There is a shower---also framed in a geometric/abstraction setting---with a woman inside and bathing. We watch her through the steamed glass as she soaps herself. Don't miss the washing machine and in action. You can't help but enjoy the show and appreciate Van Tellingen's craftsmanship. (15x16x11 cms., MDF, cement, alkyd paint, perspex, Ed 15 @ 850 euro; 50x33x31 cms., MFD, paint, metal, Plexiglas @ 6,500 euro; 70x45x809 cms., MDF, alkyd paint, plastic, electric light @ 11,000 euro.)...

In one of the back galleries be sure not to miss the installation by Hans op de Beeck that nearly consumes all the space. "The Garret" is just that and impossible to miss and represents so many art principles. It is monumental, geometric, linear, representational and in many shades of gray and only gray. It is constructed from wood, glass, paint, synthetic plaster, pigment, epoxy resin and steel. (304x266x251 cms., @ 90,000 euro.)..In the gallery's video gallery is a colorful and slightly animated work by Jocco Olivier. He also shows small acrylic paintings. (21x 29 cms., acrylic @ 7,500 euro; Video, HD, 2 min. Ed 5 @ 16,500 euro.)  Until 4th January www.ronmandos.nl

Galerie Fons Welters (Bloemstraat 140) presents a conceptual show for Saskia Noor van Imhoff. The press release sums up her objective this way: "Direct architectural elements, metal frames, are scattered through the space, invoking their previous context they are now both a drawing in-and of space." Well, one could define this show as a short workshop on the meaning of conceptual art. Everything on display looks related without being related. Individual "islands" consists of objects made of marble, steel, Plexiglas, etc. Each island is a story in itself like the large piece in the center of the back space which the press release described as relating to a room in the Berlin's Pergamon Museum. The photography which hangs with some of the objects is also conceptual, surreal and colorful. At the PlayStation section of the gallery is a large object that defies description and/or explanation. But it is continuously blowing smoke into the air. Huh? You gotta see it! Until 11th January. www.fonswelters.nl

Koen Vermeule is a good painter. You see it with this series of oils at BORZO (Keizersgracht 516) where there is a heavy contrast of black complimenting the color. One example is it in the back gallery where one large painting is a sky scape featuring cobalt blue as its color and the land mass is black. Another is a landscape/sky scape. The pastel blue sky is contrasted by the multicolored rendering of a Dutch polder. 6 RED DOTS + 2 GREEN DOTS at opening. (70x43cms, gouache @ 2,800 euro; 40x70 cms., oil on canvas @ 4,800 euro; 85x140 cms., oil + acrylic on canvas @ 9,700 euro; 180x190 cms., oil on canvas @ 15,700 euro) Until 1st December. www.borzo.com

At Galerie Rob Koudijs (Elandsgracht 12) Alexander Blank (Germ) makes large and unusual brooches from artificial "sea"  foam. Each is sculpted and carved then covered with graphite. The imagery is strip-like portraits ranging from a Pinocchio type to the Joker to Spice Girl with hairdo and so on. Fun! (1,575 euro) 3 RED DOTS at opening.

Showing, too, is Benedikt Fischer (AUS) who does avant garde sculpturing but using everyday plastic. He "sculpts" the plastic sometime giving it more definition. the imagery ranges from a big pair of lips to small paws. (225 to 975 euro) 1 RED DOT. Until 21st December. www.galerierobkoudijs.nl

A really big group show is at "GALERIE bart"  (Elandsgracht 16) and presented as the "last exam."  Expect an example of every technique and style. A wall size b/w photo is unusual and hanging directly across from it is painting that could has been influenced by Francis Bacon. A trip-tych is a contemporary updating of the Last Supper and done in the 15th century Flemish School style. A wooden floor object reflects on the work of Matta Clark. A series of avant garde etchings standout. (price range from 22, 55, 230, 450, 1,650, 2,317 and 8,850 euro) Until 14th December. www.galeriebart.nl

Three artists are showing at "gallery 9" (Keizersgracht 548). Frans Vendel does geometric/abstract paintings. He favors rectangles, cubes, circles and the triangular. There is a series in basically orange shades and also b/w. The former is simple in arrangement and the latter a bit more complex, but in a simple way. (24x30 cms., acrylic on canvas @  550 euro; 90x90 cms., acrylic on canvas @ 1,800 euro.)...Johannes Karman specializes in painting monochromatic canvases in either black or cobalt blue. And every work has a nuance of either color or form but, oh, so subtly applied. (28x28 cms screen print, Ed 22 @ 105 euro; 32x22 cms., mixed media on canvas, Plexiglas @ 950 euro; 162x130x4 cms., acrylic on canvas @ 5,000 euro.)...Saskia van der Made is a sculptor and she does very streamlined and avant garde pieces. The forms have clean lines and sometimes they come together at sharp angles. A few look like they could have been prototypes for the new EYE Film Museum. Good work! (15x14x14 cms., black marble from St. Laurent @ 700 euro; 25x15x12 cms., gray bardiglio marble @ 950 euro; 38x24x11 cms., black marble from Mazy @ 1,550 euro.) Ton van Kints is showing at Galerie Clement (Prinsengracht 845) with his conceptual work done from wood and composite board. He augers linear groves which turns the wooden objects into a form of sculpture. He sometimes paints or adds a light wash of color to the surface. Basically the work is geometric/abstract. (22 cms diameter, wood @ 900 euro; 87 cms dia. wood @ 3,500 euro.)...Also on view is the work of Gijs van Noort who is also a geometric/abstractionist. However, the emphasis is on the perspective. You will see forms that look familiar like an elaborate conference table but that's not the focus. Colors vary from the subtle to one work with strong green colored lines. (21x29 cms, C-print @ 275 euro; 55x70 cms., mixed media @ 850 euro; 100x160 cms., oil on canvas @ 2,950 euro.) Until 8th December. https://bit.ly/2J3VcnE

BMB (Kerkstraat 129) is showing S.P.A.M. van Griensven who is a complete movie production company in one. You will see handmade mask which are worn by the characters in her 15 minute film which is on view. Then there are the large and colorful drawings which are mock-ups for scenes for the film. Her style of drawing is representational and figurative. However, other elements like implied Surrealism, not to mention composition, set off the work. Pop corn was served with the showing of the film. (A packet of collector cards @ 5 euro; 70x50 cms., film poster @ 10 euro; 95x65 cms., pastel paper @ 950 euro; 150x270 cms., pastel @ 1,950 euro.) Three photographers are hanging their work at VASSIE (Langestraat 47). Matthew Murray does color landscape photography. He captures the land masses against a very big sky. The two images become integral. (100x125 cms., C-print, Ed 6 @ 2,200 euro)...Christopher Bucklow captures the human form as we might see in a Sci-Fi moves; they seem composed of eco-plasma. Form, color and light is what you get. None of the subjects are identifiable. The background colors blend with the forms. (40x40cms., Cibachrome, Ed: unique @ 3,600 euro)...Michelle Sank shots "pin-up" type photography but it is far from the 50s calendar style. First of all, the ladies are in an environment that looks like their own. Not are they glamor queens but more like the girl next door who is sort of cute. (40x50 cms., C-print, Ed 10 @ 950 euro.) Galerie LWW (1e Bloemdwarsstraat 5) presents the last of a series of three events featuring Eastern European and Russian artists. In this edition, they spotlight 14 artists and there are 14 different artistic styles not to mention techniques. Five photographers hang their work which ranges from b/w realistic to avant garde imagery. Two sculpted works by Arewik Avakian are from silicone, epoxy, polyester and acrylic; there is both humor and social commentary in the imagery. A young woman---in a police-like uniform---is standing in a small wagon connected to a fawn. While it appears cartoonish, it relates to pre-1991 days in Eastern Europe. (180, 280, 350, 840, 1,260, 2,375 to 7,250 euro.)  Until 14th December. www.galerielww.nl

The artists duo Persijn Broersen and Margit Lukacs fill the space---and walls---at AKINCI (Lijnbaansgracht 317). In the center of the large front gallery is an enclosed area measuring 430x310x280 cms., made of plywood. Inside you are confronted with a 360 degree panoramic view that ranges from a forest to a tropical environment and ending at snow-caped mountains. The imagery has been silk screened on the plywood. The walls are covered with silkscreen wall paper that reflect the 19th century in style but the theme has been influenced by the films Wizard of Oz (1939), ET (1982), and Avatar (2009). A 28:30 minute video, Beyond Sunset & Sunrise connects scripts from five classic Hollywood films. The press release explains that it was "shot entirely in Hollywood, this fictional network of a dream chasing community merges with reality facing the actors; a no-man's land between LA and Hollywood. A place where dreams define reality and the dream is defined by reality."  (105x70 cms., printed plywood, Ed 5 @ 1,500 euro; 1,000x220x610 cms., printed plywood, Ed 2 @ 8,000 euro; 430x310x280 cms., printed plywood, unique @ 26,500 euro.) A group show is at KochXBos (1e Anjeliersdwarsstraat 36). Merly Donoghue (UK) creates chimera-like subjects such as a standing "woman" with a head of a buck deer and a large rack of horns. In two works the same woman she holds a revolver and the antlers have cheery blossoms. 5 RED DOTS (74x100 cms., Ed. 101,900 euro; `123x168 cms., Ed 5 @ 6,300 euro.)...Ray Caesar (Canada) is hanging his retro-like imagery that reflects the 17th through 19th century. However, he includes contemporary nuances. A young woman, with a hand-muff, could be a still from the film Dr.Zhivago. In another, a lady is at the center of a pastoral scene. (61x61cms., Ed 4 @ 2,760 euro; 108x76 cms., Ed 12 @ 4,100 euro.)...Zoe Byland (Austrian/Swiss) paints in b/w and shades of gray. She is hanging two portraits, one of a young boy, in short pants and a batman-like mask; and the other of a young girl who is leaning on a table with a c1900 Victrola. Nicely detailed and heavily nuanced work. (110x160cms., oil, acrylic and air brush @ 12,000 euro.) Until __?__ www.kochxbos.nl

Hans Ebeling Koning is showing once again at AdK (Prinsengracht 534) with his drawings, gouaches and paintings. He is a geometric abstractionist who combines various symbols and forms like linear, circles and angles. In a sense there is a reminiscence to both the German expressionist---colors---and the Russian Constructionist. You will not see a repetition of certain colors and each work is independent of the other. (55x45 cms., drawing @ 950 euro; 60x50 cms., gouache @ 1,100 euro; 100x100 cms., oil on linen @ 3,700 euro.) Until 14th December. www.adkactuelekunst.nl

Hanging at Appels Gallery (Brouwersgracht 151) is the work of Jeppe Lauge who combines figurative, representational, expressionistic in a conceptual style. Sometimes it is easy to perceive the figurative and sometimes you feel the imagery more than you see it. The representational element is more notable in his  paintings with trees. But, again, the trees become linear abstractions. In one work, The Way Back, you will see an artist joke. You will also see allusions to classical style art as well. Overall, very original work. (50x40 cms., @ 1,060 euro: 116x11 cms., @ 4,090 euro; 194x190 cms., @ 6,920 euro.) Until 20th December. www.appelsgallery.nl

Returning for their fifth show at JASKI ART GALLERY (Nieuwe Spiegelstraat 29) is the duo Les Deux Garcons. They are the masters of the craft of taxidermy and kitsch. There is a series in which they have taken kitschy cups and saucers and tea pots---wholly or in shards---and formed them into a nest-like arrangement for the stuffed bird which takes up the center. Sometimes there is even a butterfly or two. The birds themselves wear small cone-shaped hats. There is a large zebra-like unicorn that sits on a large basket also with zebra-like stripes. Two young deer are in a Siamese parallelism. Each wears an elaborately decorated but small cap and they are secured with a pink ribbon. Two figurative ceramic pieces, seemingly cast from a mold for an  c1800 figurine, are dressed elaborately and carrying baskets. They each have the head of small parrot. In addition, there is a work featuring pussy cats and dogs. This is good kitsch and good kitsch is good art. A new catalog of their work is on sale at 35 euro, 176 pages. (30x15 cms., mixed media @ 4,000 euro; 55x20x20 cms., mixed media @ 7,000 euro; 78x78x29 cms., mixed media @ 14,000 euro.) Until 1st December. www.jaski.nl

Kahmann Gallery has opened a temporary pop-up gallery at Van Baerlestraat 39. The Lindengracht location remains active. The pop-up show is rather spectacular. It is because there are two dozen notable photographers represented. Nearly all the work is b/w. The subject matter ranges from shots of Kate Moss and Andy Warhol to a bare bottom lady in the middle of a small lake. The focus is on the human form. It is a well balanced show and an excellent survey of the photographic art for the last 30 or so years. Until __?__. www.kahmanngallery.com

Bas Geerts is at Galerie Gabriel Rolt (Elandsgracht 34) with geometric/abstract paintings basically configured with black, several shades of gray and metallic silver leaf. At the gallery you will see, along one wall, 20 paintings combining all these different colors and elements. And the work is done on the wall. Not sure how you can get it home, but, hey, if you like it you'll figure it out. Other works reflect the same style but are a bit more dark, that is, with more black and less gray. He achieves an uncanny feeling of depth. Damn, forgot to check the price list. Until 4th January. www.gabrielrolt.com

At GRIMM (Frans Halstraat 26) Dave McDermott (USA) is having his second solo show. He is an unusual artist doing unusual work. His style is a mix of pure conceptualism, geometric symbolism and surprises. And the surprises are many. Larger work seems to have an internal frame of black material. When you put your nose up to the piece you will see clearly defined geometric patterns. He achieves this by laying down short segments of black yarn. A time consuming effort that requires a month of effort according to McDermott.

Then there is the collage affect. Add sections of painted canvas, a wooden form or the yarn designs "framing" a plywood background. Several works have a figurative aspect like a face which more often than not is vague and mysterious. You will see several influences that range from Art Deco poster design to avant garde influences ranging over the last 50+ years. There is always a strong dichotomy in his compositions. (65x35 cms., jute, oil,, oiled pine, yarn on panel, nitorcellulose lacquer @ 5,500 euro; 200x150 cms., yarn, oil, wax, canvas flashe on panel @ 15,000 euro)  Until 18th January. www.grimmgallery.com

Galerie Witteveen (Konijnenstraat 16) has a group show with 80+ works by a large assortment of artists. It is an exemplary group too, consisting of photography, sculpture work, paintings and conceptual pieces of all sorts. There is a "floor piece' that is about seven meters long and in six sections made from fired clay shaped like sea shells by Joyce Zwever. She also hangs 81 wash drawings as one work and all in shades of gray on paper...Ge-Karel van der Sterrenis back with his brilliant colors. One work is a breathtaking land/sky scape panoramic (270x100 cms.) painting with a sky in turmoil and the contrasts of colors in the composition is attention getting...Hamid el Kanbouhi has a room to himself. His paintings are geometric/abstracts but not presented in the expected style. But there is a consistency in each composition. He also displays about 40+ small ceramic works that combine the figurative with the abstract; and they are colorful....Paul de Reus presents three life size figurative sculptured works with a bit of fun added...Harvey Lisse's b/w photos stand out along with Diana Blok's color photos...Jasper van der Graaf shows conceptual linear abstracts with subtle colors. Nice!...Martin Fenne works with material. But are they tapestries or collages? Whatever! What they do is to get your attention and hold on to it. The man and woman, together, under a transparent umbrella is very special...And there is more...Much more. (From 950 euro to 12,500 euro) Until 21st December. https://bit.ly/2NR0zdF

At Ornis A Gallery (Hazenstraat 11) Marliz Frencken has sculpted several figures from clay and describes the results as "Brown Sugar." Indeed, all are brown and there seems to be some clear substances dropping from ears and elbows. You should be reminded of Flemish 15th and 16th century religious figurines----with a little of Giacometti thrown in---that decorated Catholic Churches. The result of this unusual marriage is that the work is nearly an abstraction of human forms. His paintings borrow figurative imagery from Picasso's late period. Simple geometric figuration's with bright and sometimes clashing colors. (About 30 cms high clay in resin figures from 3,500 to 8,000 euro; 60x50 cms., oil on canvas @ 3,300; 200x120 cms oil on canvas @ 9,600 euro.) Until 11th January. www.ornisagallery.com

Huiz Frankendael (Middenweg 72) is hosting an exhibition for Flavio de Marco (IT) with his drawings, pastels, paintings and mixed media work. All in all there are a little over 55 pieces hanging which will give you a very good overview of this artist's oeuvre. He paints a representational scene then brings emphasis to a focus point by "framing" it with a rectangular box and making it conceptual. The landscape segment has an almost naive quality. The pastels are land/sky/sea scapes with impressionist colors and style. For his mixed media work he has taken photographs  and highlighted them with paint. Other mixed media work uses maps; then there are the drawings that are sort of representational and with a strong element of geometric abstraction. Good colors. Until 23rd February. http://huizefrankendael.nl/nl/kunst/

Seth Castell (USofA) is a photographer with an interesting speciality: He photographs dogs underwater. And the work does get your attention. One photo shows a dog with an open mouth and looking much like a shark ready to attack. The most engaging scenes are the dogs chasing balls underwater. The colors reflect the underwater scenario. The show is at LIFE: The Gallery (Lauriercracht 96). At the new jewelry Galerie RA (Nes 120) is the work of Noon Passama (NL/Thialand). At first it looks as if there has been an invasion of aliens...And you can wear them around your neck or pinned to your chest. Passama titles the series as "portraits."  In a sense they are if you like people who look like aliens. But they are not scary and, in fact, they are rather humorous. Each is an abstraction of hairy-like animals as in dog, cat and monkey. She uses fur, leather, silver and gold plate to create what appears to be a face. No two are the same or even close to being similar. Each is unique. Some make you smirk, some might scare you a little but, hey, they are all tame. (890 to 1,600 euro, brooches and necklaces). Until 30th January. www.galerie-ra.nl

The role of the art lover is to support the artists of the world. When you do this, you feed the soul of your society. You give the aesthetic meaning, both personally and socially. You give yourself: Life! Perhaps 3D is being overly dramatic but there is truth in what I say. See for yourself. You will get a natural high when you buy a work of art. Kid you Not!

...And,in the meantime, HAPPY HOLIDAYS...give a work of art, as a present, to a loved one.
