Hi JD;

They are slowly warming up.

In yesterday's game, at Wrigley, the temp with wind chill was 31 degrees. Castro said, "I have never been so cold." Oddly enough they won. Probably so they could get back to the dressing room...

Remember, the season is 162 games...And anything can happen...And will! Kid you not!

Sincerely;

Dan

INCLUDED IN THAT "ANYTHING CAN HAPPEN"....IS A 100 LOSS SEASON ???

Hi JD;

...Well, sure under the "anything can happen" rule a 100 loss
season is always possible...And sometimes consecutively.

But as I have said, I define myself as an optimist. You are not. I
prefer my positive approach to life.

...And, again, Scarlett  O'Hara and I may have made a good
coupling. Her final muttering after Rhett said, "Frankly, I don't give a
damn," was "Well, tomorrow is another day!"  And in the background
was a beautiful sunset.

Sincerely;

Dan

WRONG. SCARLETT WAS ON HER STAIRCASE WHEN SHE UTTERED THAT LAST
LINE OF THE FILM.

THERE WAS NO SUNSET...........................

IN YOUR CASE RE: THE CUBS, THE LINE W/B: "After

Hi JD;

I am willing to argue that...Admittedly, it has been a number of years
since I saw the film, but I have a visual memory.

I see you  are now on-line. My time at the Internet is up in five
minutes when the library closes.

I will reply to the other emails soon.

It is a gray and chilly day in Amsterdam...But was worst in Chicago
last night. The Cubs game was canceled.

Sincerely;

Dan

SORRY.....HIT A WRONG BUTTON.............

As I was saying, my son and his wife are in Scotland this week, so I
have more access to his computer than normal,
since I'm here more, overseeing the grandkids with school and sports.
It is gray and overcast here. Hope it clears up,
because my granddaughter has a girl's fast-pitch softball game tonight.
No fun if it's really nippy...or wet.

I think it was most fortunate the Cubbies were rained out yesterday.
Avoided a likely loss!!!!! I do admire your
loyalty, however. Hope springs eternal . But...time to time ...I'll
be giving that hope its own personal abortion!!!

CUBS STINK---------------------FILM AT 11:-00

HAVE ONLY 1 BATTER OVER .300
HAVE LITTLE POWER

PITCHING STINKS

ANY SUGGESTIONS????????????///...............JD

April 13, 2013

Daniel Gould to Jim Driscoll

Hi JD;

The Cubs stink? Hmmm. Maybe that's the link with my undying devotion...I love smelly cheese...

Obviously we are talking about if the glass is half full or half empty. To wit: Last night, against the Giants, Villanueva pitched three hit ball for 7 2/3 inning. Castro, with a man on and two out, hit a double at the bottom of the ninth and the Cubbies took home the victory.

A short review of what's good and what's bad.

Hitting. You hit the nail on its head. The key hitters like Rizzo, young phenom, is batting .167; Soriano, the ol' master at 37, .175. Clevenger at .143. However, De Jesus went 3 for 5 and raised his average to .250. Schierholtz is at .355 (his best in the past was .278 with the Giants in 2011); Castillo at .414 is way out of his league and I expect him to crash; and Castro is at .289. He had a great spring but has been slow to blossom at the start of the new season.

And pitching? It does look good, very good. Samardzija (I have no idea how to pronounce it) is 1 and 1, but the last game, which was the one he lost, he SO 13 batters in 5 2/3 innings. He is now averaging 14.5 SO/9 innings. And the there is this young guy Wood...And Barney---the golden Glove winner from last season---is expected off the DL in the next few days.

It all adds up to that fact that I am optimistic.

This thought has occurred to me. The human race, read "man,"  has a need to believe in something. To have faith. Most of the world's population transfer this faith into that of a God or gods. Since, as an agnostic, I find it impossible to have "faith"  in the God of the Bible I have transferred my "need"  to believe in something to the Chicago Cubs. If I were to limit that belief into a proposition like "I believe in myself"  I risk coming across as an egomaniac. I am all too knowledgeable about my many faults to do that. I have always advised people: if you must lie, then lie...But never to your self.

Sincerely;

Dan
